We maintain a flexible schedule that allows us to plan our day, yet also allows us the freedom to change up the routine for special occasion days, interests and needs of the children, and if the children just feel like continuing an activity a while longer.
During the more seasonable spring, summer and fall months, we spend an average of 6 hours per day in our outdoor environment. We will meet indoors for breakfast and head to the outdoor environment following, where children will explore, play, learn, and develop new skills using a mixture of educator-guided activities and child-led exploration until lunchtime. We eat lunch outdoors on picnic tables and come in for rest time. Following rest time, we head back outside for snack and prepare to transition home for the day.
The average American spends 93% of life indoors. Our goal is to change that, and we need your help! Here’s how: Please dress for the weather conditions. We practice all weather immersion, as children’s safety allows, to teach children that we don’t need perfect weather to have a great time in the outdoors!
In the winter: We will go outside if the temperature (including wind chill) is above 0 degrees. Please bring warm hats that cover children’s ears, warm boots, mittens, snow pants, and a warm coat. On cold days, we might only go outside for a few minutes. On warmer days, we will spend as much time as we are comfortable playing in the snow.
In the transitional months between winter and summer, dress children for the low of the day, not the high. Layers are helpful when we start off cool and end warm.
During the summer months, we ask parents to supply sunscreen and we apply as needed. Please check the weather and dress children accordingly to keep them cool and comfortable. Caps are welcome if children prefer them. Just like in the winter, on hot humid days, we’ll adjust time in the outdoors for safety.
